For a football-player to be voted as one of the best defenseman, he must have the skill, style, and trophies to back him. In the history of football, there have been defensemen who have stood out the most because of their style and what they have contributed to make this sport more exciting. Here, we have selected our five best defenders of all time – and true to say, it’s not surprising that our list entails few Italian players as Italy is well known to be home to ‘catenaccio style’ football.

1. Paolo Maldini

Paolo Maldini

Maldini was mentored by the great Franco Baresi, and since then, we have had the pleasure of seeing him rise and even surpass Baresi. Maldini has played 904 games with A.C. Milan, appeared 128 times under the Italian National team and has 26 titles to his name. Simply put, this defenseman is certified legend. Maldini was quick and vigorous – making it easier for him to tackle down any opponent who challenged his defense. He also had incredible endurance and energy to run up and down the field throughout the game. Because of his outstanding performance and leadership, he is nicknamed “II Capitano,” an appropriate nickname backed by the fact that he captained the Italian National team as well as AC Milan.

2. Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer

Beckenbauer is well known by his game-turning goals which were results of him modifying the roles of defenseman. He’s won European-Cup three times, UEFA Cup as well as Inter-continental Cup. He also contributed in Germany’s victory in 1972 UEFA European Football-Championship. He’s remembered best for his role as team captain when Germany won the 1974 FIFA World Cup title.

3. Franco Baresi

Franco Baresi

Baresi is considered as the greatest defender from all eras by A.C. Milan’s fans. Baresi has stayed loyal to his club through the good and bad times. He has spent his entire 20-year career loyal to Series A club A.C. Milan and has been the club’s captain for 15 seasons. He was mentored by Paolo Maldini and went on to gather fourteen major championships – six Series A titles, three European-Super Cups, three European-Cups and two Inter-continental Cups. His A.C. Milan football-jersey number six was retired as testament to him.

4. Bobby Moore

Bobby Moore

An excellent defender under the England National team, Moore is well known for his incredible ball tackle from legendary Brazilian winger, Jairinzho during the 1970 World Cup. He has two championships under his belt; 1965 UEFA Cup Winners Cup which he won with West Ham United and the World Cup in 1966, which he won as England’s captain.

5. Gaetano Scirea

Gaetano Scirea

Active from 1972 – 1988, Scirea sadly passed on at a young age of 36. However, he is well remembered for his tactical defense moves and his ability to foresee opponent’s offense and retrieve the ball from opposing team. Scirea played almost 12 years with the Italian team and during that time went on to win a World Cup title in 1982. Among his great titles are 7 Series-A titles, UEFA Cup in 1977, UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1084, European Cup in 1985 and Intercontinental Cup in 1985.
