A Warehouse is simply a large building which is used for storage of goods which can include raw materials, accessories, components and finished goods associated with manufacturing and production industries. Warehouses are commonly used by goods manufacturers, importers, exporters and wholesalers for storing goods before they reach their destination. They can be located in industrial areas of cities and big towns or even in villages.

A warehouse is supposed to have loading docks which are used to load and offload goods from trucks. Cranes and forklifts also ease in the loading and offloading of goods and products from containers. A good warehouse should be located in an accessible place for easy transportation of goods. Anywhere near roads, railways, seaports and airways should be very ideal.

There are different types of warehouses, each carrying out different activities. Retailer’s warehouses and depots store bulk purchases for wholesalers and producers. Wholesaler’s warehouses are used for blending, grading, packing and branding. Cash and carry warehouses store goods for retailers who buy in small quantities. Cold storage warehouses are refrigerated and installed with temperature controllers. They are mainly used to store fragile goods and products.

Regional distribution centers are owned and managed by large scale retailers and wholesalers. They are well located near roads and many supermarkets get their goods from there. Manufacturing warehouses keep goods and raw materials. Public warehouses are owned by the public sector. Bounded warehouses are controlled by the government and customs authority. Unpaid goods from ports are kept here until the owner pays the government customs duty.

A warehouse is used for displaying goods for sale. Wholesalers and retailers often go to warehouses to look for new imports to buy and thereafter sell them to their customers. Warehouses give them a chance of comparing different goods and products before making the purchase. It also gives them a discount as they reduce the owners cost of transportation.

Warehouses protect goods from loss, damage, fire, theft and unpredictable climatic conditions. Sometimes goods take longer before being dispatched to customers. If there are fragile goods they will be damaged by high temperatures and rain. There could be a fire outbreak or theft which cold lead to loss of goods. A warehouse safeguards goods from all physical hazards.

Warehousing helps in storing produced goods when the demand is lower than the supply. Companies can hold their goods and products in warehouses waiting for the demand to be high for prices of goods to rise so they can sell at a profit.

Some warehouses provide processing, packaging, blending and grading services for the wholesalers and retailers. This saves the time which could have been used to process the goods, therefore consumers get the goods on time.

Manufacturing businesses store goods in warehouses in anticipation of a demand in the future. The most important thing is keeping the goods safe for them to withstand the shelf life. This will minimize the fluctuation of market prices. Also shortages in the market can be avoided.
